Lumpkin County had its own moonshine makers and traders. The tradition came from the early Scotch-Irish immigrants who populated the area in the early 1700s. Whether you call it canned heat, mountain dew, pop skull, rot gut or moonshine, it all refers to an alcoholic beverage that was made by people for their own use or to sell. When the government passed a law to tax the drink, it became illegal to produce it without paying the federal revenue tax. A lot of folks took exception to that tax, and refused to pay it. Thus, “revenuers” became some of the most feared and detested agents who tried to enforce the law.
