The Anne Dismukes Amerson Essay Contest

The Anne Dismukes Amerson 8th Grade Essay Contest

The purpose of the essay contest is to encourage Lumpkin County eighth grade students to learn more about the history of Lumpkin County and to help them learn and employ good research skills.

The essay can be about any person, place, thing or event that has had an impact in the local history of Lumpkin County. The person, place, thing or event does not necessarily have to have lived/happened in Lumpkin County but it must have a demonstrable impact on Lumpkin County history.

The essay must contain at least three different references which are correctly listed in a bibliography. For example, internet information, books, interviews, archived sources, etc. are all important informational sources.

The essays will be judged by a panel from the Lumpkin County Historical Society. The top contestants will be awarded cash prizes at the annual Society’s Awards Meeting. In the rare event that none of the essays meet standards, no award will be given.

Detailed and printable essay guidelines which include proper referencing are available here.
