As World War One finally came to an end on Nov. 11th, 1918, the world was in the grip of an enemy far more deadly. The Spanish influenza had spread like wildfire around the globe killing more people than the battlefields of Europe.

In Lumpkin County, the first cases of this silent killer began to appear in September. Without vaccinations or a known cure, many died from the virus. Based on news articles from The Dahlonega Nugget and other local sources, Chris will recount how this terrible disease killed more than fifty of Lumpkin County’s residents in the final months of 1918.
