We will take part in the unveiling of a time capsule left by Andrew W. Cain, author of “History Of Lumpkin County For The First Hundred Years, 1832 -1932.”

This event features items from the University of North Georgia’s Special Collections and Archives. The featured materials will only be on display for the evening.

Dr. Bill Balco will speak about his work with the Yahoola High Trestle. It was constructed in 1859 as an important component of the Hand Ditch, which brought water to the gold miners. This line drawing of High Trestle across Yahoola Creek (from Blake and Jackson 1859) is on the cover of “The Hand Ditch Report of Lumpkin County, Georgia,” a copy of which you receive as a gift when you join the Lumpkin County Historical Society, Inc. If you have not received your copy, Robbie Niles will have some to give out after the program.

BONUS FEATURE

There will also be a “pop-up museum” featuring ONE item from YOUR collection. Bring your item to the library by 6:30 to put on display for the evening. (photos, letters, other paper items or items you’ve found while digging – arrowheads, pottery shards, keys, bottles, etc.).
