Henry “Doc” Johnson
In recognition of 25 years of dedicated service as the official emcee of the Gold Rush Days Festival.
Since 1999, Henry “Doc” Johnson has been an indispensable part of the Gold Rush Days Festival. He began by assisting longtime and beloved emcee Guy Sharpe by filling in for announcements and sponsor messages, gradually taking on a larger role. In 2001, following Mr. Sharpe’s retirement, Doc became the official emcee, a position he would hold with distinction for a quarter-century.
For more than 25 years, Doc—always in period attire—has been the familiar voice and welcoming presence of the festival, guiding audiences through contests, performances, and community celebrations. Beyond the festival, he has contributed to the preservation of local heritage by emceeing the World Gold Panning Championships and performing in the Mountain Music and Medicine Show, sharing the history and traditions of Dahlonega and Lumpkin County with generations of residents and visitors.
The year 2025 marked the 71st annual Gold Rush Days Festival and Doc’s final year as emcee. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, he was honored as Grand Marshal and named MC Emeritus by the Gold Rush Days Festival Board of Directors. His enduring dedication and leadership were further acknowledged through a formal commendation from Governor Brian P. Kemp, celebrating the lasting impact of his service on the community’s cultural heritage
