Roberta receives award from Chris Worick
Robbie Niles has been a cornerstone of the Lumpkin County Historical Society since before 1989 and a steadfast supporter of all its activities. She has held every elected leadership position, secretary, treasurer, vice president, president, and board member, and has played an active role in guiding the Society in a positive direction each year.
Under Robbie's guidance and vision, the Society has continued to grow and thrive. One of her greatest contributions has been as the primary author and editor of the “Now & Then” newsletter. For nearly three decades, Robbie faithfully compiled an archive of past programs, achievements, events, and other newsworthy accomplishments of the LCHS. Additionally, she has produced “Proceedings,” the official record of the Society's yearly activities.
Working tirelessly behind the scenes, Robbie has taken on the Herculean task of organizing the annual business meeting agenda, maintaining an accurate membership roster, providing monthly program announcements to “The Dahlonega Nugget,” and ensuring that guest speakers receive a complimentary gift. Her extensive experience and knowledge of past programs have made her a reliable source of new ideas for future programs.
From 2009 to 2011, Robbie was instrumental in the Chestatee River Diving Bell project. As secretary for the Historical Society, she helped create programs, announcements, and promotional items. She also compiled, wrote, and designed the interpretive signs that are displayed at the Diving Bell pavilion.
Robbie served on many special committees, most notably the annual Madeleine K. Anthony Awards committee, that evaluates significant contributions to the appreciation and preservation of Lumpkin County's history.
Robbie volunteered as a docent at the historical 1884 Jail Museum on countless occasions, consistently greeting guests with a warm smile. From its inception, many of the museum’s interpretive signs and artifacts displays, particularly in the domestic section, are thanks to her dedicated efforts. She also produced two videos: the 1884 Jail History video and Jail Cell interpretive video.
The Lumpkin County Historical Society extends its gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to Robbie for her many years of continued volunteer service and dedication to the growth of the organization.
